Aviation Industry Remains Proactive Amid COVID-19

Despite being one of the hardest hit industry sectors by the COVID-19 pandemic, the aviation industry is still working hard to be passenger-centric and proactive. Whether supporting pandemic-driven supply chain demands or being vigilant in protecting passengers, airports and airlines are in hands-on mode. Here are just some examples of how they are doing their part to address COVID-19 impacts.

  • Ontario International Airport increased its handling of commercial cargo by 22% in March over the cargo tonnage it moved in March 2019 demonstrating its vital role in supply chain management.
  • To help passengers return home, several airlines including Etihad and Qatar continue operating dedicated flights in key routes.
  • Helping protect passengers from possible virus contamination, Emirates is conducting on-site rapid COVID-19 tests – the first airline to do so.
  • United Airlines stepped up to assist in transporting millions of units of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for infection control from China to the United States and specifically to New York hospitals and other healthcare facilities. New York has been one of the hardest hit areas. Among the equipment being transported are masks and goggles in addition to ventilators which have been in short supply. As of April 9th, New York State now leads every country (outside of the United States) in the world in corona virus with 213,779 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 11,586 as of April 16, 2020.
